In a display of appreciation for their lifetime of service and resilience, two World War II veterans from Texas recently celebrated reaching a milestone that few have the privilege to see—their 100th birthdays. San Antonio resident B.L. Craighead was surrounded by family and friends this past weekend, while Leo Rowell of Amarillo was honored with a surprise party at the Amarillo Veterans Affairs (VA) Community Living Center.
According to KSAT, B.L. Craighead, a former pilot and ardent fisher, was very happy with the love his family and friends showed him. Recollections of fishing trips at Laguna Madre and Medina Lake were shared as they celebrated. His daughter-in-law reminisced, “We would go fishing a lot down at Laguna Madre.” Craighead expressed his contentment, saying he was very happy with the love shown on such a special day.
Meanwhile, in Amarillo, Leo Rowell was caught completely off guard to find a cafeteria transformed into a space teeming with the faces of family long missed and friends long cherished. Visibly moved by the surprise, Rowell told MSN, "Fantastic, I had no idea you were going to do anything like this. I don't deserve it, I don't believe, but it tickles me to death to be here. I don't know, I'm starved for words."
Rowell’s special day was highlighted by messages from political figures like Senator Ted Cruz, Representative Ronny Jackson, and former President Donald Trump, all honoring his service. The veterans were celebrated for their achievements and as representatives of the 'Greatest Generation.' As the family prepares for more celebrations, they are dedicated to ensuring Rowell's legacy inspires future generations.
