Central Michigan University has appointed Matt Drinkall as the new head coach of its football program. Drinkall, who previously served as an assistant coach at Army West Point, brings 21 years of coaching experience, including six years with Army football. During his tenure at Army, Drinkall helped lead the team to an impressive 11-1 season, a No. 22 ranking, and an American Athletic Conference championship. He becomes the 30th head coach in Central Michigan's football history, as abc12 reported.
Matt Drinkall's appointment as head coach follows the departure of Jim McElwain, who led the team to a victory in the 2021 Sun Bowl. Drinkall was chosen for his innovative coaching style and strong leadership skills, developed during his time at Army West Point, as reported by The Detroit News.
"We are so excited to get back to our Midwest roots and to be a part of this passionate community. We cannot wait to build meaningful relationships and help contribute to the success of this storied program. We are also honored to follow in the footsteps of the McElwains, who have meant so much to college football. Fire Up Chips!" Drinkall told MISPORTSNOW.
Amy Folan, CMU's Vice President and Athletic Director, acknowledged Drinkall's past accomplishments and suitability for the role. "Matt has been successful everywhere he's been," Folan told The Detroit News. "He is very innovative, he's been a student of the game, and has a passion for college football. He's coming from an institution in Army West Point that puts a premium on leadership. He has had success as a head coach and has a reputation as a players' coach. With Matt's background and abilities, he is the perfect fit to lead us into the next chapter of Central Michigan football."
His official introduction to the university will take place at a midday event termed "Fired Up to be a Chippewa," as announced by MISPORTSNOW.
Drinkall's successful tenure with Army included leading the team to an outstanding season, with their offensive line becoming a finalist for the Joe Moore Award. CMU President Neil MacKinnon praised Drinkall for his leadership, innovation, and success, qualities well-suited for guiding CMU into the future.
