The Columbus City Council has released the names of the top ten candidates vying to fill the vacant seat for District 7. This list comes after Councilmember Shayla Favor's recent departure from the post. The candidates were selected from a pool of nearly 35 applicants from the diverse communities of District 7, and the council members have nominated up to three individuals each for final consideration. According to the official announcement, the Columbus City Council expressed gratitude, stating, "We’re incredibly thankful to the residents of District 7 who stepped forward to serve their neighbors by applying for this important role."
In the alphabetically arranged list, names reflect the district’s varied tapestry. Otto Beatty III, Kate Curry-Da-Souza, and Shaneece Green will stand alongside Tim Fulton, Robert Leis, and Dorothy Malone in aspiration for the City Council seat. Rounding off the list are Lisa Masci, Bailey Phillips, Densil R. Porteous, and Jesse Vogel, all aiming to shape the political landscape of the Columbus community decisively. In acknowledging these candidates' civic engagement, the council embraces this spectrum of choices wholeheartedly. Residents can review applications and resumes for each finalist, now available to the public.
As part of the selection process, Columbus residents are invited directly to a public hearing. Set for December 18, the hearing is an opportunity for the constituents to air their views on the candidates actively. The council emphasizes public involvement, hosting the event at City Council Chambers within the Columbus City Hall. To participate, as per Columbus City Council, "those wishing to provide testimony must email Kevin McCain at [email protected] by 3 p.m. on the day of the hearing." Public engagement is further guided, with speakers allocated a three-minute window to express their perspectives.
With the public's voice expected to play a crucial role, the City Council prepares to sway the outcome potentially. They are to vote on their choice early the following year, with the appointee expected to take the oath of office shortly after that. This individual will then embark on their leadership and civic duty journey within District 7 and for the greater Columbus community. As the city anticipates this new chapter, the collective breath of hope and expectation holds firm, awaiting the ushering of a fresh face on the City Council seats.
