The Columbus City Schools (CCS) Pathway Express is shifting the gears of traditional learning with its recent venture to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium on December 14. This excursion, as part of their accelerated learning program, provided students and their families a chance to marvel at the holiday lights and delve deep into the world of STEM and zoology. According to a statement obtained by CCS, Extended Learning Supervisor Brianne Pannell expressed that such experiences "foster critical thinking" and are pivotal in "prepares students for academic success."
At the free event, families engaged in hands-on activities. Children got their hands wet at the Watters Aquatic Conservation Center, discovered marine life, and participated in environmental awareness workshops with Keep Columbus Beautiful. Notwithstanding the cold, the event was warmed by the spirit of learning and community. CCS Director of Literacy Shalonda Likely-Roach commented on the power of reading and writing as "essential tools that help individuals and communities connect." According to the Columbus City Schools (CCS). Her words, grounded in the notion that language is the bedrock of a society built, were reaffirmed by the smiles of children clutching new books – a step towards bridging literacy gaps.
CCS provided free transportation from select high schools across the city to ensure inclusivity and access. This act of removing barriers was further strengthened by the presence of interpreters, making the day's program accessible to Spanish-speaking parents. One parent attendee said via CCS, "Thank you for this event and having interpreters to help us get through the gate." Such initiatives are a testament to the district's commitment to education and equity.
The essence of the Pathway Express initiative, as depicted by CCS, lies in blending academic pursuits with meaningful experiences in local landmarks. It's a measure aimed at amplifying engagement and joy in education for Columbus City Schools' families. As students wandered amidst the Zoolights, amidst the glow of festive cheer, the message was clear: learning can and should transcend the confines of a traditional classroom. Interested families can visit the Columbus City Schools District’s website for more information on the Pathway Express' next stop.
