A Detroit family of four is without a home this holiday season after a fire destroyed their house on Braile Street last Saturday. The blaze, which started in the basement, left Roslyn McGee and her children with only the clothes they were wearing, according to CBS News Detroit.
A devastating fire destroyed McGee's home and all of their possessions, including Christmas presents for her three children. "We literally don't have nothing. We are starting from the bottom," McGee said. The American Red Cross has provided temporary hotel accommodations, but McGee is unsure of what comes next. "I don't have a next step because I don't know. I just don't know," she admitted. Amid this struggle, her biggest wish is for a stable home for her children: "But my biggest Christmas wish right now is a house. I want a house for me and my kids. I want us to be ok for Christmas," as stated by CBS News Detroit.
After a fire destroyed their home, McGee’s son, Antoine Jones, recalled, "My whole left corner of my bed, ablaze." Despite the loss, McGee said, "Materialistic things we can always get back, but a life you can’t get back, so I’d rather have my life and my children than anything materialistic." The community is helping, with donations being collected through a GoFundMe page shared by WXYZ and FOX 2 Detroit. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and housing officials are working to find a new home for McGee and her children as they rebuild.
