Concerns have been heightened on Detroit's west side after repeated sightings of two teenagers sleeping on a porch despite harsh winter weather. The situation, which was brought to public attention through social media posts and ongoing neighbor reports, is now under the scrutiny of the Detroit Police Department and Child Protective Services. According to CBS News Detroit, investigations were prompted by viral images and local outcry over minors allegedly enduring the outdoors for prolonged periods.
Elizabeth Jones, a neighbor, described regularly seeing the young individuals using blankets to sleep outside, an occurrence she states has been happening since at least September. "I mean, the kids have been sleeping on the porch for months, so that's what everybody has been seeing," Jones stated, as reported by CBS News Detroit. Despite repeated calls to authorities, it appears that the teens have continued to sleep exposed to the elements.
Despite the assertions of neglect, authorities informed, as per Detroit Free Press, that the parents claimed the home was accessible to the children, indicating no barriers to them seeking shelter indoors. The police department expressed profound concern over the reports. It affirmed that any signs of parental negligence would lead to a thorough investigation, possibly culminating in referrals to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
Community worry persists as neighbors like Kiarra Collins and Zaneta Taylor express distress over the teens' well-being in the frigid temperatures. The situation has become a glaring local issue, considering the teens have been utilizing the porch as their place of rest since the middle of summer, with weather conditions now hitting freezing points. "It's just too cold for those kids to be outside, sleeping on the porch. That's just ridiculous," Taylor expressed, per FOX 2 Detroit. Local volunteer Dwight Harris, associated with ICON 10, a group active in community violence intervention, has joined the efforts in response to the viral video and neighborly concerns, aiming to assist the juveniles.
