Douglas County is actively pursuing growth through strategic investments in sectors deemed vital for the well-being of both the community and the local economy. At the recent State of the County event, Commissioner George Teal reported back to the community, emphasizing collaborative efforts that promise to continue to push the county forward. "This really is the perfect time of year to look back and to look forward with gratitude, and to celebrate the year that was and all that was accomplished in service to Douglas County residents and our business community," he said, as obtained by Douglas County.
This year, the focus has particularly been to more effectively and efficiently invest in core priorities such as public safety and transportation. The County has also made considerable strides in improving human services and maintaining a strong water future. These initiatives were designed not only to address immediate concerns but to also function as a foundation for sustainable economic prosperity. The County’s success, according to Commissioner Abe Laydon, has, among other things, resulted in "the highest number of school resources officers in the state," he said, as per Douglas County.
The Douglas County Commissioners used the State of the County event, which took place on Thursday, Dec. 12, and can be viewed on the county's YouTube channel, as an opportunity to demonstrate transparency and engagement with the community. The theme "Celebrating Partnerships. Elevating Economic Vitality," was reflective of the county's commitment to strengthening ties with various stakeholders for the benefit of residents and businesses. Achievements touted include a reduction in homelessness and unsightly public panhandling to functional zero, suggesting a tangible impact of the partnerships and investments on the community's quality of life.
According to Douglas County, the introduction of Commissioner-Elect Kevin Van Winkle at the event seems to keep steadfastly maintaining this trajectory. "The state of Douglas County is safe, fiscally strong, healthy and innovative," Van Winkle told attendees, emphasizing the county's dedication to prudent financial management and innovative solutions that benefit taxpayers. Ellie Reynolds, CEO of the Douglas County Economic Development Corporation, also weighed in, stating, "The 2024 State of Douglas County was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the incredible achievements of the past year." Reynolds' comments underline the communal spirit that the event sought to foster among local leaders and organizations dedicated to the area's development.
