Residents with developmental disabilities in Douglas County will continue to see their community bolstered by a substantial cash influx thanks to the voter-backed developmental disabilities mill levy. Utilizing funds from the mill levy, first approved by voters back in 2001, Douglas County has just green-lighted over half a million dollars to support local services in 2025. The precise figure, as reported by Douglas County, is $543,813.

The bounty of these grants, which can range widely, from $4,300 right up to $71,400, is earmarked to sharply focus on innovative and collaborative means to serve individuals with developmental challenges. In their Dec. 10 session, the Board of County Commissioners ratified grants for a variety of projects, as noted by Douglas County, including "job training, housing, and transportation, among other services." To distribute these funds strategically, an advisory council meticulously reviewed applications to ensure that the programs chosen perpetually stand out in their delivery and effectiveness.

The division of funds is clear-cut. Ninety-three percent of the mill levy's yield flows directly to the county's principal community-centered board, Developmental Pathways, while a marginal 1.5% covers the Treasurer’s fees. The remaining pot, a 5.5% share, is what fuels the grant program in question. It's this slice of the pie that continues to add value to the myriad services and platforms that aim to make life for those with developmental disabilities not only manageable but full of potential and growth.
