A Durham man faces federal charges following an alleged shootout at Crabtree Valley Mall, amplifying concerns over gun violence amid the holiday season. Jamarion Burton, 22, was indicted by a federal grand jury on November 21, for possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. The event, which soberly punctuated an otherwise festive period, occurred on October 26, when a verbal altercation in the mall between Burton and another group segued into an exchange of gunfire in the parking deck.
Upon responding to emergency calls, the Raleigh Police Department apprehended one individual at the scene. Through witness accounts and surveillance, they identified Burton, who had fled but was later arrested in Durham. At the time of his apprehension, he was found with a firearm believed to have been used during the incident. U.S. Attorney Michael F. Easley, Jr. mentioned in a press release from the United States Attorney's Office, "The holiday season is a time for peace on earth – not shootouts in the parking deck," a statement that resonates with the community's desire for safety during a time of togetherness and joy.
The charge against Burton points to a graver sentence if he is found guilty, facing a maximum of fifteen years in prison. The indictment is part of an ongoing effort to combat violent crime through the Violent Crime Action Plan and Project Safe Neighborhoods, initiatives aimed at fostering interagency collaboration and blending strategic enforcement with community-based prevention—a dire reflection of our times where the barrel of a gun too often disrupts the fabric of public safety.
As stated in a press release from the United States Attorney's Office on May 26, 2021, the strategy aims to strengthen trust between law enforcement and communities. It supports organizations focused on violence prevention, refines law enforcement priorities, and, importantly, emphasizes measuring the outcomes of these efforts to foster a safer, more harmonious society.
