In an unexpected turn of events at the Jacksonville Zoo & Gardens, an errant warthog by the name of Mateo managed to elude his keepers, prompting a search that led to collaborations with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO). Officer Sam Ho of the Unmanned Aerial Systems unit deployed the Eagle Eye thermal drone, a tool that proved instrumental in the search and safe recovery of Mateo late Friday night, as chronicled in the video shared by First Coast News and Action News Jax.
This unusual mission began when the zoo discovered that Mateo had managed to free himself from his enclosure, necessitating the cancellation of their Colors of the Wind event as a search team convened. Resorting to advanced technology, JSO’s Officer Ho operated the drone which identified a heat signature consistent with the missing warthog, "I flew the drone a couple of times," Officer Ho told News4Jax, "Had a spot of interest with the thermal drone spot." This spot of interest led them to a densely vegetated area where Mateo was discovered.
The thermal drone's camera, which captures heat instead of light, helped the team pinpoint Mateo's location, nestled within a thicket of palmetto. The successful operation highlighted the intersection of technology and animal care, revealing new dimensions to wildlife management within urban spaces.
Mateo's adventure concluded without incident as he was found unharmed and subsequently transported to the animal hospital for a full health evaluation. In a gesture of gratitude, the zoo shared their thanks on Facebook: "A massive thank you goes to our incredible staff for their tireless efforts in recovering Mateo, and to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office for their invaluable help in locating him with a thermal drone." They described the effort as an unequivocal "team effort," a sentiment echoed by the various reports that followed Mateo's safe return.
