Panic briefly ensued at Milwaukee County's safety building on Monday when a staff member at the District Attorney's office came into contact with an unknown white powder sent via mail. Emergency crews, including a hazardous materials team, swiftly responded to the scene shortly before three in the afternoon. The substance, which provoked hours of meticulous investigation and protocol, was eventually determined to be sugar, according to CBS 58.
The incident triggered a significant safety response due to the potential severity of such incidents, bringing to mind to very evoke the tragic anthrax events of 2001. Although it turned out to be a false alarm, the substance's origins were traced to an individual from the Milwaukee County Jail, Deputy District Attorney Kent Lovern confirmed in a statement obtained by Journal Sentinel. Concern surged through the complex as emergency responders clad in airtight suits entered the fourth-floor office to ensure no threat was posed to public safety.
The district attorney's office was not evacuated during the episode, and nearby court and clerk operations continued uninterrupted. This managed to preserve a sense of normalcy amidst potential chaos. According to Jeremy Starr, the Milwaukee Fire Department Battalion Chief who spoke with CBS 58, the hazmat team "tested the substance for any chemical, biological, nuclear, any of those sorts," ultimately reporting everything came up negative.
After the substance was deemed harmless, the intersecting roads of Eighth and State streets were reopened to the public, having been closed off to facilitate the investigation. Meanwhile, the package has since been passed on to the FBI for further examination. The emergency personnel's response showcased the coordination and preparedness of city services when faced with such potentially catastrophic events, though residents can breathe easily knowing this particular scare was unwarranted. The Milwaukee Fire Department's quick response was chronicled in a video shared by TMJ4 News, providing the public a closer look at the procedures followed during such harrowing situations.
