The Florida Lottery made headlines recently as they cracked down on unlawful lottery ticket sales by "The Lotter," an unauthorized online courier service. According to a press release from the Florida Lottery reported by WTSP, this service was found to be selling lottery tickets in conjunction with a retailer known as "ZaZa Accessories."
John F. Davis, Secretary for the Florida Lottery, warned against such rogue operations, stating, “The Florida Lottery shuts down rouge operators who could potentially scam people in Florida,” in a statement obtained by Islander News. “We are fully committed to supporting the integrity of the Florida Lottery,” Davis continued, emphasizing the importance of fair play and the educational benefits derived from the state's lottery system.
The discovery of the illegal sale operation was the result of the Florida Lottery's routine monitoring and security measures. Steven Harriett, the director of security for the Florida Lottery, told Tampa Free Press, “The actions of this online courier service and lottery retailer not only violate state law but also compromise the experience of our loyal players and authorized retailers. We will continue to work closely with law enforcement to root out illegal activities and maintain the public’s confidence in the Florida Lottery.” This effort to protect both the trust in and the fairness of the Lottery is an ongoing priority for the organization.
As a measure to safeguard its consumers, the Florida Lottery has issued a reminder, urging all players to only buy their tickets from authorized retailers. The use of third-party services like The Lotter is illegal, not just breaking the law, but also exposes individuals to significant risks, such as fraud, misrepresentation, and even the possibility of forfeiting rightful winnings. In addition, the Lottery asks anyone aware of unauthorized lottery activities to report them, further assisting in the protection of the community's gaming processes.
