Former Central Michigan University quarterback and U.S. Army Sergeant Tommy Lazzaro, 27, tragically died in a hunting accident last Sunday. The incident occurred at a range on Eglin Air Force Base in Walton County, Florida, when Lazzaro was struck by a stray round while helping a fellow soldier with car trouble, according to People.
Lazzaro, a former football player at Central Michigan University, was known for his perseverance and dedication. A native of Monument, Colorado, he played for CMU after transferring from Dodge City Community College, eventually earning a starting spot. After graduating in December 2019, he joined the U.S. Army and served as a sergeant in the 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne). His obituary called him "a shining example of commitment, resilience, and honor," and Adam Jaksa, the voice of the Chippewas, remembered him as someone who "always had a big smile on his face," as stated by WZZM 13 and Mlive.
Col. Patrick Nelson honored Lazzaro’s service, stating, "We will never forget his dedication, courage, and commitment to safeguarding our freedoms." Lazzaro played a "vital role" in key training operations and leaves behind his parents, sister, and fiancée. A celebration of life with full military honors will take place on Saturday in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, as reported by People.
