A tragic incident unfolded in Leroy Township yesterday when a 62-year-old Fowlerville woman was struck and killed by a vehicle after leaving her van to secure cargo. The Ingham County Sheriff's Office reported that the woman was driving on Elm Road, near the junction of Holt and Van Orden Roads, and was forced to stop abruptly to prevent a collision with a deer. After exiting her vehicle, she was hit by another car driven by a 44-year-old woman from Webberville, who had swerved to avoid the stopped van, WLNS reports.
In the chaotic wake of the incident, the woman, whose name has not been released pending family notification, died despite attempts to save her life. "Northern Ingham Emergency Services Authorities and one of our deputies initiated CPR and other life saving measures at the scene," said the sheriff's office. "Unfortunately, her injuries were too severe and she was pronounced deceased in the ambulance," according to a Lansing State Journal interview.
The driver of the vehicle that hit the woman and her daughter were also injured and subsequently transported to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. As per WILX, there was one adult passenger in the victim's van, although authorities did not specify if that individual suffered any injuries during the incident.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the accident, with the Ingham Regional Crash Investigation Team and Michigan State Police providing resources on the scene and at the hospital. Any witnesses or individuals with further information are encouraged to contact Deputy Phil Martin at 517-676-8444, ext 1952, as this investigation is ongoing. With the investigation still active, while seeking to understand the events that led to this devastating loss, the community awaits closure.
