A Gaithersburg man has been arrested in connection to a fatal collision that took the life of a pedestrian this past August. Maxim Galkin, the 24-year-old driver, faces charges of gross negligence manslaughter by vehicle after his car struck a man on a riding lawn mower, according to Montgomery County Police Department.
The incident took place near the intersection of Great Seneca Highway and High Gables Drive, where first responders found 28-year-old Juan Guerrero-Moreno critically injured in the roadway. Despite efforts to save his life, Guerrero-Moreno later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The Collision Reconstruction Unit determined that Galkin was driving at an estimated speed of 100 mph in a 50-mph zone, doubling the legal limit, when his 2021 Genesis G70 collided with the victim.
Following the crash, which occurred as Guerrero-Moreno was crossing the highway's northbound lanes, Galkin remained at the scene. He was subsequently arrested on December 17 and charged. After being processed at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, Galkin has been released on a $100,000 unsecured personal bond.
The dangers of high-speed driving are well-documented, yet this tragedy underscores the catastrophic consequences that can occur within seconds on our roads. Safety measures and posted warnings constantly remind motorists to adhere to speed limits and stay vigilant, especially in areas where pedestrians may be present. In this case, despite the yellow signs warning of an intersection and pedestrian presence, a combination of excessive speed and perhaps a moment's distraction led to a collision that ended in the worst possible outcome.
