As communities continue to rally in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Governor Roy Cooper lent a hand at the Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry (ABCCM) Servant Leadership Center, expressing his gratitude for the numerous volunteering organizations assisting with recovery efforts. In his visit, the Governor underscored the significance of a collaborative approach between the state government and volunteer groups, a combination deemed essential for long-term recovery and rebuilding in Western North Carolina.

"We are determined to succeed and we are deeply grateful for the volunteers who continue to work tirelessly in our communities," Governor Cooper said, according to a statement obtained by the Governor's press office. The Governor wasn't alone in his efforts as he joined with leaders from various volunteer organizations, signifying a unified front against the devastation left by the hurricane.

Leaders in the community reflected the sentiment of partnership and gratitude. "On behalf of WNC, we are honored to have Governor Cooper visit and work alongside ABCCM, the churches, and our community during Hurricane Helene relief efforts," ABCCM Chief Operating Officer Brandon Wilson told the Governor's press office. Wilson recognized the Governor's hands-on participation and commended him on his leadership and forthcoming journey.

The spirit of the holiday season inspires an acknowledgment of the unwavering cooperation and service demonstrated by non-profits, churches, businesses, government agencies, and volunteers. “During this holiday season, despite so much tragedy and loss, it's important to take a moment to celebrate the extraordinary cooperation and service of countless nonprofit organizations, churches, businesses, government agencies and volunteers," Dan Leroy, President and CEO of United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County, highlighted, emphasizing the region's resilient response to the catastrophe. He noted that the ability to persevere and emerge stronger from the disaster hinges on a continued concerted effort; a tenet core to the United Way, as per Governor's press office.

Governor Cooper has led the NC Disaster Relief Fund, raising $16.8 million to support recovery efforts. In November, he also went to Washington D.C. to request over $25 billion in federal aid for continued relief, showing his commitment to restoring Western North Carolina.
