A fire broke out at a Grafton home yesterday, consuming an attached garage and a car. The main structure was spared significant damage. The fire occurred near the intersection of 1st and Maple shortly before 3 p.m., with smoke visible from several blocks away. Crews from the Grafton Fire Department worked to contain the blaze.
The emergency response was extensive, with assistance from neighboring city departments in Cedarburg, Port Washington, and Saukville, as well as Grafton police officers and Ozaukee County sheriff's deputies, according to FOX6 News. When first responders arrived, they found the garage fully engulfed in flames but were able to contain the fire before it spread to the main house.
The homeowner, identified as Mary Fisher by GMToday, was initially perplexed by the sight of smoke, first mistaking it for a harmless burn from next door, only to discover the flames bursting from her garage window. Meanwhile, the community gathered, with some expressing concern while others stood nearby as Fisher awaited the outcome for her home from across the street.
The quick response not only saved the structure but also helped protect both human and animal life from potential harm. "You could see the smoke column from several blocks away, so there was a lot of attention," Grafton Fire Chief William Rice stated, according to an interview with Journal Sentinel. All residents, including Fisher's pets, were unharmed. Firefighters were able to safely rescue Fisher's dog and cat.
