The Houston Health Department is hosting its final community health improvement fair of the year, aimed at providing support to uninsured residents facing health disparities. The event, scheduled for tomorrow at the Destined for Empowerment Community Development Center, will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will offer free healthcare services, including COVID-19 and flu vaccinations, as well as screenings for conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure.

Health statistics in some Houston zip codes show high rates of cancer and diabetes, while insurance coverage remains low. Juan Alvarado, a staff analyst for the HHD's Community Assistance and Transition Care of Houston (CATCH) program, highlighted the challenges facing these communities. “These events bring health and social services to areas that have high rates of cancer and diabetes but lower rates of insurance coverage,” said Alvarado in a statement obtained by the Houston Health Department.

The health fair will also offer on-site enrollment for various medical services access programs. To apply for resources such as Harris Health (Gold Card), SNAP, Medicaid, Medicare, and Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) benefits, participants will need to provide documents such as identification cards, utility bills, proof of income, or bank statements. The event aims to help connect individuals to essential health programs, with the first 100 applicants having the opportunity to find a primary care physician.

According to HHD, this series of health fairs, the final of 12 held this year, has made a significant impact. "One of the goals of these events is to provide 100 people with a primary care physician. We’ve surpassed that effort," Alvarado told the Houston Health Department. They are focused on addressing health concerns early by ensuring that professionals concentrate on each attendee's specific needs and concerns.

CATCH's main mission is focused on community health. Through the health fairs, the CATCH program, in partnership with organizations like Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, aims to empower, educate, and support clients, with the goal of promoting a healthier and more resilient Houston.
