A 22-year-old woman, Nyla Gamboa, was arrested at George Bush Intercontinental Airport on allegations of a hit-and-run incident that left a bicyclist dead in north Harris County, according to authorities. FOX 26 Houston reports that Gamboa was charged with failure to stop and render aid involving death after the crash on Wednesday morning.
In her court appearance on Thursday, Gamboa's bond was set at $40,000. The suspect is employed as a hotel valet and previously worked as an Amazon delivery driver. She cohabitates with her mother and sister and had no prior convictions before this tragic event, as detailed by KHOU.
Gamboa was identified via surveillance video that captured the crash at the intersection of Airtex Drive and Brundage Drive, authorities say. The bicyclist, a man in his 30s, was declared dead at the scene. Following the collision, the vehicle Gamboa was purportedly driving suffered damage significant enough that the driver had to abandon it, with its tires shredded a mile away from where the cyclist was struck.
Harris County Pct. 4 Constable's Office stated that K-9 units tracked the suspect to a cul-de-sac, where she was believed to have entered another vehicle. Later on Wednesday, law enforcement held a news conference, releasing an image of a woman allegedly fleeing the scene. By the evening, Gamboa was taken into custody while attempting to board an out-of-state flight. "The constable's office says she was apprehended while attempting to board a flight out of state at George Bush International Airport," noted FOX 26 Houston in their coverage of the case.
