Tonya Lacey, a mother from Howell, faced no jail time after her 2-year-old son accidentally shot and killed himself with an unsecured firearm in her purse. The incident occurred on June 11, 2023, at their home in the Rolling Oaks subdivision. Although Lacey was initially charged with second-degree child abuse, which could carry a sentence of up to ten years, her penalty was significantly reduced, according to Audacy.

Livingston County Judge Miriam Cavanaugh decided to release Lacey without further probation, saying, "It is a tragedy, and I don't think that further action this court takes or doesn't take regards to sentencing is going to change anything for Ms. Lacey. As a mother, I'm certain that she's living in her own personal grief." After the incident, Lacey was ordered to attend counseling and take gun safety classes. Her attorney, Mitchell Ribitwer, noted that if the shooting had happened after Michigan's new gun storage laws were in place, the outcome "it could have been an entirely different result." At the time, those laws had not yet taken effect, as per CBS Detroit

Lacey, 42, was sentenced to eight months of probation and had her concealed carry permit revoked after a tragic incident in which a 2-year-old boy died. Her attorney argued against jail time, saying, "A little 2-year-old boy is dead. How tragic can it be? What a great loss for the parents. How much more can you punish a parent other than I lost my child? You take responsibility for it, and there's going to be guilt for the rest of her life. What more can the court do to her? Nothing. She's going to suffer, and hopefully, she can overcome it, and the family can heal," as stated by WILX.
