In a gesture celebrating the life and service of Cleveland firefighter Johnny Tetrick, a section of Interstate 90 has been renamed in his honor. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed House Bill 107 yesterday, officially designating the stretch of road between East 72nd Street and East 105th Street as the "Cleveland Firefighter Johnny Tetrick Memorial Highway." The veteran firefighter lost his life on November 19, 2022, while responding to a car crash on this very segment of I-90, calmly placing the lives of those he served above his own safety.
Fallen in the line of duty, Tetrick had devoted 27 years to firefighting, spending most of his career at Cleveland Fire Station 22. According to News 5 Cleveland, Tetrick is remembered by his daughter Regan Tetrick who said, "My dad was, is and always will continue to be the greatest thing in my life." The renaming is a lasting tribute to Tetrick's legacy while driving home the point about the perils first responders regularly face.
At the ceremony, State Rep. Tom Patton, who sponsored the bill, reminded those gathered of the significance of this memorial. "Having this sign on the roads for decades and decades to come - people who haven’t been born yet will ask who is Johnny Tetrick," Patton said, according to WKYC. The emotional resonance of such an act underlines the community's commitment to remember Tetrick's sacrifice.
This honor comes amidst legislative changes in the wake of Tetrick's death. Senate Bill 185, which was amended after the incident, stipulates a minimum five-year sentence for anyone convicted of vehicular homicide involving a firefighter or paramedic. Mentioning Tetrick's 27+ years of dedication, Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb expressed his enduring memory, "Cleveland will always remember Johnny Tetrick for his passion and dedication in helping our residents every single day," Bibb told Spectrum News1. The driver responsible for Tetrick's death is currently serving a life sentence, thereby bringing a degree of closure to the tragic event.
One of Tetrick's three daughters was notably absent among those scheduled to be at the bill signing ceremony. She was in the process of delivering what would be Johnny Tetrick's first grandchild, marking a poignant instance of new life concurrent with the commemoration of one well-lived.
