In a remarkable display of quick thinking and bravery, Jackson police officer Logan Speaks is being lauded for his life-saving actions after a mother's 911 call alerted authorities to her infant son's dire situation. On Tuesday evening, during the peak of rush hour, Officer Speaks and Sgt. Brinks were called into action when a distressed mother noticed her 3-month-old infant was choking in his car seat, leading her to pull over on the highway off ramp, FOX6 News reported.
Without hesitation, Officer Speaks ran through heavy traffic to reach the vehicle where he found the child tense and unable to breathe, according to Insider News. Employing back thrusts and chest compressions he successfully restored the infant's breath, dislodging the obstructive item, the infant was now able to cry which is a universal sign of an open airway. Support from the Jackson Police, Slinger Fire Department, and Lifestar EMS Wisconsin ensued, ensuring the infant, named Kyland, received the necessary medical attention and is now recovering at home.
Speaking to TMJ4, Officer Speaks, with two years on the force and facing his first CPR emergency, recounted, "The crying was a sign of relief where you're like, 'I did it. It's over.'" His intervention, under a minute, was pivotal in reversing what could have been a tragic outcome. The officer remained on scene until additional responders arrived to ensure the baby’s safety was fully secured.
