Mayor Donna Deegan of Jacksonville has been playing a hands-on role in the fight against senior food insecurity in the city, taking to the streets herself to deliver holiday meals to homebound senior citizens, as reported by ActionNewsJax. The initiative is part of the city's broader efforts to address the difficulties faced by food-insecure older adults.

The Mayor's transition team originally pinpointed feeding the elderly as a top priority, ultimately leading to a $2 million boost for the Senior Food Insecurity Program. This funding has enabled Meals on Wheels to drastically to reduce their waitlist by 45% since July 2024, serving nearly 1,300 additional seniors, according to information from News4Jax.

During her meal delivery round, Mayor Deegan visited local residents like Catherine and Eddie Wright, who expressed their gratitude for the Mayor's involvement. "It made me feel real good to know that she is interested in learning how things are going," Eddie Wright told First Coast News during the Mayor's visit.

Mayor Deegan also used this opportunity to reflect on the city's progress and discuss plans for the upcoming year. "I think if you look at some of those programs that we kicked off after the transition report came out, some of those pilot programs...have been extraordinarily successful," Deegan told First Coast News. These successful initiatives include affordable housing and healthcare services for the uninsured, hinting to continue to push these achievements into the new year.

Results from a city-conducted survey showed that a significant majority of program participants reported improvements in their nutrition, quality of life, and a reduction in food insecurity. With these efforts and personal engagement, Mayor Deegan hopes to not just deliver food, but also to raise awareness about the issue. "It’s a good way also just to call attention to that," she explained in a statement obtained by News4Jax.
