February in Raleigh heralds not just a change in the calendar but also a reverent nod to history. This year, Museum Mornings is set to honor East Raleigh's African American heritage, providing a space for both reflection and education. Every Friday morning throughout the month, John P. "Top" Green Community Center will be buzzing with visitors, their minds soon to be steeped in the rich legacy of the East Raleigh-South Park community over a warm cup of complimentary coffee.

In a move to both showcase and celebrate Black History Month, the community center is hosting “Centuries in the Making,” an exhibit spotlighting the history and impact of one of Raleigh’s oldest African American communities. This collaborative effort with the South Park-East Raleigh Neighborhood Association (SPERNA) promises to bring forth the neighborhood’s tale of resilience, creativity, and unity. According to the John P. Top Greene Community Center, "We’re proud to celebrate Black History Month by honoring both the broader African American experience and the local stories that have shaped East Raleigh-South Park." Visitors, of all ages, are invited to engage with the exhibit and to then widely join discussions that shine a light on East Raleigh-South Park’s role in the city’s history.

As Nadia Marriott, the center's manager, was eager to highlight, "Museum Mornings create a welcoming space for meaningful discussions and reflection, while our partnership with SPERNA brings the incredible legacy of this community to life." This sentiment is echoed throughout the various facets of the program, designed to encourage visitors to not only learn but to also share and connect over narratives of struggle and triumph. The center welcomes guests from February 7 - 28, every Friday between 11 a.m. and noon, with no associated costs.

For more details or to plan your visit, the community center's announcement can be found on their website. This initiative underscores the importance of local history in informing our present and empowering our future, all over a warm cup of coffee and engaging conversation.
