A Kenosha high school student brought a gun to Indian Trail High School and Academy on Monday, and the subsequent discovery of the weapon has spurred a response from school and police officials. In a joint letter, Kenosha Police Chief Patrick Patton and Kenosha Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Jeff Weiss communicated that "appropriate charges will be filed" against the student. The initial tip-off came from a social media post showcasing a weapon, which led school staffers to take immediate action, FOX6 News reported.
The situation escalated on Tuesday, when the student, identified as a 16-year-old, was detained and taken through juvenile intake, revealing the weapon in their possession. Though the firearm was not wielded in a threatening manner during the school day, it was still on school grounds, leading to potential charges of terroristic threats, firearm possession on school grounds, and possession of a dangerous weapon by minors. Local police chief Patton and school administrators coordinated to make certain the student's location was secured, as reported by TMJ4 News.
After the initial searches conducted by two officers did not turn up the firearm, a more thorough search conducted during the student’s detention was successful. This led to the weapon being recovered and the student being taken into custody. Kenosha police are in the process of reviewing the incident to establish whether the officers involved complied with the police department's training standards, as detailed by WISN.
As the Kenosha Police Department examines the incident, the question of the procedural competency arises based on whether the officers followed proper training standards. The school district, on the other hand, plans to impose disciplinary action in line with board policy to address the students' infraction. In their joint statement, school district and police representatives urged the community for understanding and support as they "continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of our schools," according to Patton and Weiss in a statement obtained by FOX6 News.
