Hillsborough County is stepping up its game with the launch of this year's Hiking Spree. The county is kicking off the ninth annual spree, inviting residents to traverse its trails from December 1 through April 30, 2025, as reported by HCFL.gov. As part of the event, participants can earn rewards like a patch, a medallion for a walking stick, or a pet bandana by completing just eight out of the many hikes listed.
Out of the array of outdoor activities, two special hikes are featured this year, with one lit by holiday lights on Saturday and another ringing in the New Year on January 1, both of which will count towards the Hiking Spree challenge; the Holiday Light Night Hike brings festive illumination to Seffner CommUNITY Park, while the New Year's Day Hike presents a morning excursion through Lettuce Lake Park, the details and registration for these events can be found on the county's official website.
According to the Hiking Spree's description, the initiative provides a range of trails in terms of difficulty, from easy strolls to more challenging treks, designed to cater to all ages and abilities – some are even wheelchair accessible. The Hiking Spree takes place during what is described as prime bird-watching season, and participants are encouraged to share their experiences online with the hashtag #TakeAHikeHC.
Those joining the spree will not only enjoy the physical benefits of hiking but will also discover ecological diversity in Hillsborough County's parks and preserves, spread throughout the region; starting with festive lights that may offer a sprinkling of holiday cheer for the whole family and proceeding with a hike that sets a health-conscious tone for the year ahead, all details including the $5 fee for the New Year's Hike are available on the county's website for those interested in starting their adventure.
