Flint, Michigan is in the spotlight again due to a major oil spill in June 2022. Rajinder Singh Minhas, president of Lockhart Chemical Company, is facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges over the 15,000-gallon spill, according to The Detroit News.

Lockhart Chemical faces multiple charges, including a 14-year felony for falsifying public records, after a harmful oil-chemical spill. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said the company’s business model reflected a mindset where, "Mr. Minhas ran this chemical factory with the mentality geared toward keeping operational costs low and profits high," which led to neglecting environmental regulations. The company is also accused of falsifying documents about its wastewater systems. In response, Michigan's environmental department ordered Lockhart to stop using its faulty systems and store waste above ground until the issue is fixed. CEO Minhas was arrested last Wednesday, arraigned, and released on personal recognizance, as reported by CBS Detroit.

Minhas faces state charges for negligence related to hazardous waste, with possible jail time and fines. This case is tied to the ongoing Flint water crisis, which began with lead contamination in 2015-2016. Michigan Attorney General Nessel stated, "Those who run a business have a responsibility to ensure their operations do not jeopardize public health or the environment, especially our precious water resources," and warned of severe penalties for those who fail in this duty. Flint residents are hopeful for justice as Minhas' court appearance is set for January 2, as stated by CBS Detroit.
