As storm season approaches the coastal enclave of Long Beach, city officials have taken the initiative to launch the Be Storm Smart campaign, a concerted effort to better prepare the community for severe weather conditions. With a commitment to education and readiness, the campaign aims to provide residents with practical steps to safeguard against the might of nature's unpredictability, according to an announcement released by the City of Long Beach.

Mayor Rex Richardson emphasized the impact heavy storms have historically had on the area, stating, "As we have seen over the last couple of years, heavy storms can take a toll on our community. We are committed to making sure that City systems are as prepared as possible for incoming storms and to share tips and tools with our community so that everyone can be prepared. We are taking proactive measures to educate and empower our community to be storm smart." The campaign will reportedly cover a spectrum of areas including general emergency awareness and city-wide mitigation strategies.

Resources to aid residents in storm preparedness will be disseminated through social media channels and a series of videos, which will be made available on the City's official website. The initiative also features a central resource hub at longbeach.gov/LBRain, complete with an interactive map to assist locals in locating necessary materials like sandbags from their nearest Long Beach Fire Department Station. Information on how to sign up for Alert Long Beach, the City's emergency notification system, will also be provided.

Furthermore, energetically contributing to the dialogue on preparedness, Reggie Harrison, Director of the Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications Department, acknowledged the urgency of readiness. “Severe weather systems can bring on sudden periods of heavy rain, wind, and flooding in low-lying areas that can quickly and severely impact our community,” Harrison articulated. The director strongly advised the public to take proactive measures now to best face the upcoming storm season.

Long Beach, with a population nearing half a million and known for its beautiful stretches of sandy beaches and tourist attractions like the Queen Mary, holds a unique position both geographically and culturally. Ensuring the safety and well-being of such a dynamic community remains a top priority for city officials as they encourage all residents, businesses, and organizations to be prepared.
