Long Beach is gearing up to celebrate the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with its 37th annual parade and festival. On Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025, the community will be invited to join in the festivities that span from the morning parade to an afternoon filled with live entertainment and activities at Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Mayor Rex Richardson said, "Each year, we gather to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose vision for a just and equitable society continues to inspire us all," according to a press release from the City of Long Beach.
The parade, starting at the corner of Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue and Anaheim Street at 10 a.m., promises to be a reflection of Dr. King's ideals of peace, unity, and justice. With a celebration at the park scheduled from noon to 5 p.m., the day is set to celebrate Dr. King's dream, which Mayor Richardson suggests lives in "each step we take." The event will feature a main stage with live performances, a kid zone for the younger attendees, and vendors offering food and merchandise. Interested parties ranging from local businesses to nonprofits and community groups have been invited to participate and can submit an application by Dec. 30, 2024, as per the official announcement.
Sixth District Councilwoman Dr. Suely Saro noted the significance of the event, stating, "As we come together, we embody his values of compassion, equity and unity and commit ourselves to an inspiring and bright future for all," as found in the statement by the City of Long Beach.
