A Longmont man, 37-year-old Joseph Robert Alexander, was taken into custody on Saturday on charges involving possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). According to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Alexander faces four counts of sexual exploitation of a child after investigators tied him to an IP address that was found to be sharing suspected CSAM files.
The Boulder County Digital Forensics Lab (BCDFL) initiated the case, coming across over 2,000 files tied to Alexander during a proactive Peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing investigation. This Special initiative, aimed at safely tracking down individuals involved in illegal activities online, allowed investigators from both Colorado and Arizona to download suspicious content from his IP address. A July raid at Alexander's 800 block of Crisman Drive residence in Longmont resulted in the seizure of multiple electronic devices.
Post a forensic analysis, which extended over several months, enough evidence was gathered to establish probable cause. Accordingly, an arrest warrant for Alexander was obtained, stemming from the discovery of P2P software and further CSAM videos and photos on his devices. Alexander now faces two counts related to the possession of videos and two counts about images, all under Colorado Revised Statutes about the sexual exploitation of a child.
Task force teams, including the Colorado Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC), worked in collaboration to address this high-technology crime. They play a crucial role in providing digital forensics expertise and analysis, which are key to securely pinpointing and arresting individuals like Alexander who pose potential threats to children. Alexander was booked into the Boulder County Jail with no bond set, pending a review by a judicial officer. The Boulder County Sheriff's Office case number assigned to this investigation is 24-02581, reflecting the interagency effort involving the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Longmont Department of Public Safety, and others in the regional ICAC Task Force.
