After months of detours and construction, the Mabton area bridges are finally open to traffic again. According to a report from the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), the SR 241 Mabton bridges were reopened to the public yesterday. The completion of this project has returned full capacity to the bridges, previously affected by weight restrictions.

WSDOT and contractors have replaced the slough bridge, which sits just south of the Yakima River, and retrofitted the Yakima River Bridge. This effort was no small feat, requiring the demolition of the old slough bridge and the construction of an entirely new structure. The bridges' repair, deemed necessary for the region's infrastructure, began back in June 2023, and while it forced travelers to embrace a 10-mile detour, the end result hopes to facilitate smoother travels between Mabton and Sunnyside.

WSDOT's Project Engineer, Jerry Wood, lauded the project's completion. "This project allows us to restore both bridges to their full capacity. Removing the weight restrictions that were in place before helps people travel between Mabton and Sunnyside," Wood told WSDOT News. His statement underscores the significance of the bridges to local mobility and the area's economy at large.

Minor work on the bridges is still on WSDOT's calendar, set to continue next summer with tasks like installing guardrail and painting.
