Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. announced the sentencing of Jamel McIver, 31, to 20 years in prison for a rape committed in March 2023 at an Upper West Side apartment building. McIver pleaded guilty to rape in the first degree on October 10 and accepted his sentence on Thursday, according to a press release from the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.
McIver shadowed a 21-year-old woman into her building on West 64th Street and Amsterdam Avenue after she finished her night out at about 1:20 a.m., he then forcibly led her to a stairwell, where he sexually assaulted and raped her, and during the assault, he continued to threaten her before finally releasing her outside the building, after which McIver discarded his jacket and sweatshirt as he fled the scene.
Regarding the sentencing, District Attorney Bragg stated in the same release, "Jamel McIver viciously threatened and raped a woman in the building she called home, causing indescribable fear and pain that she and her loved ones still endure today. I thank this brave survivor for coming forward and sincerely hope the resolution of this case can offer her a sense of justice. My office will continue to center survivors and we encourage victims of sexual assault to call our trauma-informed Special Victims Division at 212-335-9373."
Assistant D.A.s Jonathan Carfagno and James Clarke of Trial Bureau 40 spearheaded the prosecution with support from Assistant D.A.s Shannon Lucey, Vanessa Puzio, Nicole Blumberg, and Executive Assistant D.A. Justin McNabney, overseeing various divisions related to special victims and intimate partner violence, they, with former IPSVB analyst Noah Taylor, provided critical assistance while the Survivor Services Bureau, especially Special Victims Counselor Nakeisha Vanterpool, offered invaluable support throughout the process. D.A. Bragg also thanked the NYPD, especially Police Officer Mark Polak from the Manhattan Special Victims Squad, for his efforts in bringing the perpetrator to justice.
