Actor Mark Ruffalo's recount of his startling discovery of a brain tumor and subsequent diagnosis two decades ago was made during a recent appearance on the "Smartless" podcast hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett. The revelation itself is both surreal and harrowing, as Ruffalo described waking from a vivid dream with the uncanny inner knowledge that he had a brain tumor, as reported by CNN.
The dream occurred while his wife, Sunrise Coigney, was pregnant with their first child, Ruffalo said it was unlike any dream he had before it was just pure knowledge that prompted an immediate sense of urgency to seek medical advice. Ruffalo shared this with the podcast, emphasizing the lack of symptoms besides an ear infection and after consulting with a doctor on the film set and undergoing a scan, the doctors' reaction hinted at the gravity of the situation; a nurse, pale as a ghost, informed him of the "mass behind your left ear the size of a golf ball," which could not be identified until a biopsy was conducted, he detailed in his interview with Standard.
Amid the anxiety of the health scare, Ruffalo made the difficult decision to withhold the news from Coigney until after the birth of their son, Keen, to not cloud what he felt was a paramount moment for her, comparing it to a wedding or quinceañera in its significance. Following the diagnosis, which fortunately came back as a benign tumor, Mark had to face the risk of severe complications from surgery, which included a 20 percent chance of facial nerve paralysis and a 70 percent chance of losing his hearing in one ear, he recounted in the Koimoi article.
Ruffalo’s surgery resulted in deafness in his left ear yet he managed to recover from an initial facial paralysis; his recollection of the ordeal brought a sense of both vulnerability and determination, recounting his thought process, him willing to sacrifice his hearing in place of maintaining his facial functions so as to fulfill his role as a father. Battling through recovery, Ruffalo went on to not only continue being an active parent but also to have a booming acting career, including his role as Bruce Banner in the "Avengers" film series, the recovery was no small feat considering the stakes of his chosen profession, as per Koimoi article.
