In a recent turn of events, the beloved Metro Detroit staple, Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum, has found a new lease on life within the precincts of West Bloomfield Township. The current location in Farmington Hills is set to be superseded by the new, more expansive facility in Orchard Mall, adjacent to a Planet Fitness establishment. The swap comes in response to plans for redevelopment at Hunter's Square Shopping Center, which would flatten the museum's former structure to pave the way for a contemporary Meijer supermarket and a series of eateries.
The relocation news, which was first announced on the museum's Facebook page, is a relief to an anxious fanbase who feared the worst after the Farmington Hills City Council greenlit the demolition in February. Owned and operated by Jeremy Yagoda, the place that a Free Press columnist described this way: a potpourri of amusements, vintage posters, toy airplanes, pinball, fortune tellers, Skee-Ball machines, and cheap toys you can win with tickets, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Reflecting on the forced transition, Yagoda shared his philosophy with WWJ Newsradio: "When life hands you lemons, just make lemonade. Make the best out of what you're given." Such resilience seems to be a defining trait of Yagoda and the institution he helms. The transition plays out as a tangible manifestation of that ethos, with Marvin’s expected to shutter its doors at the Farmington Hills location on Jan. 5 and eyeing a reopening in its new space by late spring or early summer 2025, following the necessary construction and arrangement of exhibits.
According to Marvin's website, the museum, a trove of vintage coin-operated machines, macabre oddities, unusual nostalgia, and the newest video game crazes, will enjoy a nearly threefold increase in size—from 5,300 to over 14,000 square feet of space. This expansion, Yagoda hopes, will foster new, thrilling attractions and improved amenities for birthday parties and private gatherings.
