Former Florida congressman Matt Gaetz is not expected to face charges from Central Florida law enforcement following a House Ethics Committee report accusing him of multiple violations, including paying for sex and drugs. According to FOX 35 Orlando, law enforcement agencies in both Orange and Seminole counties say that the statute of limitations for the alleged crimes has expired, thus likely precluding any further legal action against Gaetz.
The ClickOrlando report details that one such incident reportedly occurred at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orange County. Despite allegations, the Orange County Sheriff's Office did not investigate these claims further. "After reviewing the report, the incident involving a minor did not occur in OCSO’s jurisdiction, and the statute of limitations appears to have expired regarding the possible violations related to prostitution," the Orange County Sheriff's Office stated.
In Seminole County, allegations include Gaetz paying for sex with a minor during an event. This specific charge was part of testimony gathered by the House Ethics Committee. However, as with the Orange County case, the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office confirmed they are also not pursuing charges due to the statute of limitations expiration, as mentioned in the FOX 35 article.
Although Gaetz's associate, former Seminole County Tax Collector Joel Greenberg, was sentenced to federal prison for crimes including underage sex trafficking, the Justice Department did not formally charge Gaetz with any crimes. Both local law enforcement agencies indicated they had deferred their investigations because of this ongoing federal investigation, which could appear to potentially undermine the pursuit of justice by not fully utilizing the time before limitations ran out.
