As the holiday season ends, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel urges consumers to check store return policies to avoid post-holiday issues. She advises shoppers to "review the store’s return policy before making the trip" since policies vary and are often time-sensitive, according to the Michigan Department of Attorney General.
"Return policies vary greatly from store to store, but almost all impose a time limit on returns," Nessel said. In a consumer alert titled Avoiding Unhappy Returns, she advises shoppers to be vigilant about return policies. Physical store customers should check for return policies at cash registers or ask clerks, while online shoppers should carefully review policy details on the seller's website. If return policies aren't readily available, Nessel urges consumers to contact stores directly and request them in writing. This proactive approach helps shoppers avoid the frustration of dealing with unreturnable merchandise, as reported by the Michigan Department of Attorney General.
Nessel encourages consumers not to give up if a return is refused. "If your return has been refused by a store clerk, ask to speak with the store manager," she said, especially for defective items or those not as advertised. Credit card companies may also help with return disputes.
