Michigan residents feel relief at the pumps as gas prices have descended below the $3 mark for the first time since the year's onset. Today's report, AAA highlighted that the average cost for a gallon of regular unleaded gas now rests at $2.94. According to a WXYZ article, this figure represents a 14-cent decrease from the previous week.
Moreover, this present rate shows a decrease of 13 cents compared to last month's average and stands at 22 cents less than the rates from this same period a year prior. To put these price drops into perspective, a full 15-gallon gas tank now costs Michigan drivers approximately $44, which translates to savings of around $14 relative to the peak prices observed in August 2023. "Motorists across Michigan are seeing the lowest gas prices since January of this year," said Adrienne Woodland, a spokesperson for AAA, in a statement reported by CBS News Detroit. She added, "If demand falls, alongside increasing gasoline stocks, pump prices could drop further."
Despite the state-wide average pricing, there are areas within Michigan where gas prices significantly vary. Ann Arbor holds the top for the most expensive gas at an average of $3.02 per gallon, followed by Marquette and Jackson, which trail closely behind. On the other end of the spectrum, the least expensive gas in Flint is $2.86, with Saginaw and Benton Harbor slightly higher, as reported by Upper Michigan’s Source.
In terms of broader economic indicators and their influence on gas prices, recent data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) has revealed that while gasoline demand saw a slight uptick, climbing from 8.50 million barrels per day (b/d) to 8.73 b/d, total domestic gasoline inventories also experienced an increase. The same data set showed a fall in crude oil prices, with WTI closing at $68.54 a barrel. "If demand falls, alongside increasing gasoline stocks, pump prices could drop further," Adrienne Woodland reiterated in insights shared by CBS News Detroit.
