In 2025, Michigan’s minimum wage will increase twice. Starting January 1, the standard minimum wage will rise from $10.33 to $10.56, and the minimum wage for minors will go from $8.78 to $8.98. Tipped employees will see their wage go up from $3.93 to $4.01. These changes are based on inflation, as mentioned by FOX 2 Detroit.
A Supreme Court ruling will raise Michigan’s minimum wage to $12.48 on February 21, almost a $2 increase. This follows a legal battle over a 2018 ballot initiative to raise wages, with the court rejecting lawmakers’ attempt to change it. Tipped wages will also gradually align with the standard minimum wage, starting in 2026 at 60% of the regular rate and eliminating tipped wages by 2030. Some workers, like servers and bartenders, are concerned about how this change will affect their earnings, as stated by Detroit Free Press and WXYZ.
The issue of tipped minimum wage in Michigan remains unresolved after the state House adjourned last Thursday, leaving the debate open for lawmakers to revisit in January. Michigan’s minimum wage will rise annually until 2028, with adjustments for inflation starting afterward. These changes will continue to impact both workers and businesses as the state adjusts its wage standards, as noted by Detroit Free Press.
