The Milwaukee community is dealing with the aftermath of a tragic shooting incident that occurred on Christmas Day, which resulted in the devastating loss of two teenage lives. According to reports confirmed by the Milwaukee Police Department, the victims, identified as 18-year-old Nayah Vasquez and 15-year-old Exziel Rivera, were shot while inside a vehicle near 37th and Scott streets. WISN states the shooting happened at approximately 11:30 a.m., with Rivera being pronounced dead at the scene and Vasquez dying later in a hospital.
Neighbors, who were startled by the sound of gunshots and a subsequent crash, witnessed the aftermath of the incident. Ambur Marsh, a local resident, recalls hearing about 15 gunshots before seeing a car crashing into a porch, as reported by FOX6 News. Marsh also described the harrowing sight of the wounded victims and emphasized how the senseless act of violence could have easily hurt more innocents, stating, "It could have been me and my daughter if we didn’t make it inside in time. We could have been collateral damage for all we know."
In the wake of the tragedy, friends and family are remembering the victims. Rivera, known affectionately as "X", is being mourned for his kindness and ever-present smile. "His smile would just make you want to smile," told Grace Howard to TMJ4. Vasquez, remembered for her vibrant presence, is also sorely missed. Her love for music, friends, and the outdoors are recounted by grieving loved ones, painting a picture of a young life filled with joy and passion, now abruptly ended.
While the Milwaukee Police Department continues its search for the perpetrator, no arrests have been made in connection with the shootings, and the wider circumstances are still under investigation. Milwaukee Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa expressed her outrage and heartbreak over the incident. "Violence of this nature is always unacceptable, but I am especially outraged that this happened on Christmas morning", obtained by FOX6 News.
