Montgomery County Recreation is set to open its Rec Assist financial aid applications to the public on December 9, a move expected to grant lower-income residents the chance to engage in recreational activities and programs at reduced or no cost. In a statement made available by the county, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich emphasized the importance of equal access to recreational opportunities and pointed to the nearly $900,000 utilized by residents in 2024 through Rec Assist funds. Elrich encouraged those who qualify to apply, saying via the Montgomery County Recreation website, "Every resident should have access to recreational activities. Rec Assist is a valuable program that helps alleviate financial hurdles."
The qualification criteria for the financial aid includes receiving public assistance from several programs such as Care for Kids, Free and Reduced-Price Meal Services (FARMS), and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), among others. As detailed by the Montgomery County press release, students enrolled in a Montgomery County Public School participating in the Community Eligibility Provision will also find themselves eligible for the Rec Assist program. Each approved family member will be given $400 in credit to their ActiveMONTGOMERY account, which can be used for various classes, activities, and memberships.
Residents can submit their Rec Assist applications online, mail them to Montgomery County Recreation's designated address, or drop them off at the Wheaton premises from Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The awarded funds can then be used throughout 2025, from January 1 to December 31, or until the allocated funds have been depleted. Applications are processed, and funds are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Successful applicants will receive financial aid deposited into their ActiveMONTGOMERY accounts, usually accessible within ten business days. This will facilitate a smooth transition into enjoying the various programs offered. As described in the Montgomery County Recreation's announcement, these funds aim to remove financial barriers that might otherwise prevent families and individuals from participating in enriching recreational activities that the county provides.
