The Montgomery County Department of Police spearheaded a sizable traffic operation yesterday along MD Route 355. The joint task force featured collaboration with multiple agencies, including the Maryland State Police, Rockville City Police, Gaithersburg City Police, and Chevy Chase Village Police. As reported by the Montgomery County Police Department's official press release, the operation began at the break of dawn last Wednesday and stretched into the early hours of the following day.
The multi-agency initiative sought to aggressively curtail an array of traffic infringements, something that has become necessary along one of the county’s most trafficked corridors. In the space of 21 hours, officers made 382 traffic stops, resulting in the issuance of 165 citations and 330 warnings. To improve pedestrian safety, 106 drivers were stopped for failing to yield at crosswalks. Two drivers were arrested for impaired driving.
Officers inspected commercial vehicles and found 46 violations, with many being serious enough to stop six vehicles and one driver from operating temporarily. These actions are part of a larger effort to address issues like aggressive driving, distracted driving, seat belt use, and impaired driving.
In addition to enforcement, there was a focus on educating the public about traffic safety. MCPD cadets and officers engaged with the community, especially in shopping areas where pedestrians and vehicles are both active. They raised awareness about road safety and laws, handing out pamphlets and talking to people. This approach aims to make MD Route 355 safer for everyone, whether driving or walking.
