The skies of Maryland have become a canvas of curiosities as residents and government officials alike report mysterious drone sightings across the state. Former Gov. Larry Hogan joined the chorus of concerned voices after capturing what he described as dozens of drones buzzing above his Davidsonville home, according to a video posted to social media. Hogan, capturing attention with his posts, is demanding action from the federal government as the strange occurrences persist.
Following Hogan's apprehensions, other state leaders have also voiced their discomfort. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy penned a letter directly to President Biden, asking for increased federal support in light of drones hovering over critical sites such as military bases, CBS News Baltimore reported. Similarly, Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York has taken to social media to affirm the state’s collaborative investigation efforts with the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Meanwhile, the White House maintains that no current evidence suggests a threat to national security or public safety.
Baltimore residents join the concerned crowd, with accounts of drones sighted around the city limits. Eileen DiPaula and her husband Mike, a former law enforcement officer who spotted a drone from their bedroom window, expressed their alarm. "It's very frustrating that our intelligence people, and our FBI, and the people that should have the answers don't have any answers," Mike DiPaula stated, as per WBALTV. "They keep saying it's not a threat. Well, what's your evidence to prove that it's not a threat? Show us, you know, at least show us the evidence of that because right now, there's a lot of fear in the community."
While local curiosity has certainly been piqued, The White House attempts to ease collective fears. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby conveyed to the media that many of the sightings might be manned aircraft operating lawfully, "We have no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or a public safety threat or have a foreign nexus," Kirby stated. Despite these reassurances from the White House, the phenomenon remains an unsolved disruption to Maryland's nocturnal peace, as WBALTV reported.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), in response to the drones' supposed infringement on sensitive areas, has enacted temporary flight restrictions over locations like the Picatinny Arsenal Military Base and Trump National Golf Club Bedminster upon federal request.
