Streaming giant Netflix is set to drop back and pass a long-awaited documentary into the eager arms of NFL fans, chronicling the life and career of Denver Broncos Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway. The upcoming film, aptly titled ELWAY, was announced just in time for a pre-game buzz as the Broncos prepared to lock horns with the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium, as detailed by Bleacher Report.
The storied journey takes us from Elway's celebrated tenure at Stanford, leading up to, the dramatic moment he was drafted in 1983 by the Colts, only to finagle his way into a Broncos jersey through a trade that remains one of the most noteworthy shuffle plays in sports history, 9NEWS reports. His subsequent 16-season campaign with the Broncos saw five Super Bowl appearances and two victories solidifying his place among the greats of the game.
Behind the scenes of the documentary, which remains tight-lipped on a release date, is a roster replete with creatives. Ken Rodgers of Hard Knocks fame is steering the documentary ship as director and executive producer alongside a squad from Skydance Sports, Omaha Productions, and NFL Films, as confirmed by Deadline. Celebrity quarterback Peyton Manning, who played under Elway’s management for the Broncos, is also on deck to lend an authentic voice to the production.
Post-retirement, Elway has stayed close to the sport, taking on the role of general manager and executive vice president of football operations for the Broncos. It was under his leadership that the team clasped their third Super Bowl trophy in 2015 with Manning at the helm following an illustrious tenure that came to a close after the 2020 season, as noted by Bleacher Report.
