Yesterday marked a new beginning for Raleigh's municipal government as the freshly elected members of the 2024-2026 City Council were ceremoniously sworn in. The public event gathered a significant audience at the Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts and introduced Janet Cowell as Mayor alongside her team of council members, including two at-large and four district representatives.
As the city veers to swiftly tackle the challenges and responsibilities that lie ahead, the council's first order of business is to convene in a regular session today at 1 p.m. This meeting, as stated on the City's official announcement, promises to transparently further the city's legislative agenda and will be accessible live to the public through streaming platforms.
Monday's ceremony was punctuated by rich displays of local culture and community, encompassing the Presentation of Colors by the City of Raleigh Joint Color Guard and a drum presentation, coupled with a land acknowledgment by the Triangle Native American Society. The Honorable Judge Paul Ridgeway administered the oaths, while the spiritual tone was set by Lisa Yebuah's invocation, followed by celebratory tunes offered by The North Carolina Symphony.
Those unable to attend the ceremony can witness the proceedings of the City Council's regular meeting which will be live-streamed on the City's website and YouTube channel, engaging in the civic process from their own spaces across Raleigh.
