In a significant announcement that marks a major milestone for healthcare access in the state, North Carolina's Governor Roy Cooper revealed that over 600,000 residents have signed up for Medicaid Expansion since its inception a year ago. This uptake rate has defied expectations, achieving in half the anticipated time what was estimated to be a two-year target.
This robust enrollment figure was shared in a recent press release, signaling North Carolina's commitment to broaden healthcare coverage. Governor Cooper expressed his stance on the matter, saying, "From day one, we set out to get people covered and get them care. Now, more than 600,000 people have the peace of mind that they can go to the doctor, get needed medications and manage their chronic health conditions — that's life-changing." Originally projected to require much longer, the swift enrollment has been noted as a "monumental achievement for North Carolina," according to Cooper's statements obtained by the official gubernatorial website.
State officials, like NC Health and Human Services Secretary Kody H. Kinsley, have been quick to attribute the success to the collective effort of various partners and community leaders. "When expansion launched, we estimated it would take up to two years to enroll 600,000 newly eligible individuals and families into Medicaid," Kinsley told official gubernatorial website. "Instead, we accomplished that achievement in the first year — a testament to the remarkable dedication of our many partners and community leaders across the state to help North Carolinians get covered and get care."
According to numbers provided by the state, the Medicaid Expansion enrollees filled over 4.15 million prescriptions and tagged $62.2 million in dental claims over the past year. With a noteworthy portion of the enrollees residing in rural areas, specifically, 217,183+ rural community members have received health coverage – or more than one in three of all newly eligible people. This reflects not just a quantity, but a spread of Medicaid's reach across diverse communities. Information regarding eligibility and application processes continues to be available on the NCDHHS’ Medicaid Expansion webpage for those seeking access to healthcare services in North Carolina.
