Oak Park residents seeking help with home repairs can benefit from the "Rock the Block" initiative, a community program led by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento and funded in part by the City of Sacramento. The program focuses on essential repairs to improve safety and living conditions for homeowners near the new UC Davis Aggie Square. Axel Magallanes, the City’s Housing Administrative Analyst, emphasized the program’s goal of supporting Oak Park families. Applications are open until January 10, 2025, as reported by Sacramento City Express.
The "Rock the Block" program supports a variety of home repair services — from simple yard cleanup to major HVAC replacement. To qualify, homeowners must reside within a specific Oak Park region outlined on the application map and own the property in question. Interested parties can find information regarding qualifications and applications in various languages, including English, Spanish, Hmong, and Farsi, on Habitat's website. The initiative not only aims to readily significantly assist individual homes but also to enhance the overall community spirit and infrastructure.
Since its inception in 2018, "Rock the Block" has made a notable mark on the Oak Park community. With the concerted efforts of more than 4,000 volunteers, lending upwards of 25,000 hours, the initiative has successfully completed over 130 home repair projects and in excess of 30 community endeavors. Such projects were possible due to an average annual investment of $400,000 by the program, totaling over $2.8 million to date. This level of investment is a testament to the program's commitment to the neighborhood and has been vital in improving residents' quality of life, according to a statement obtained by Sacramento City Express.
The upcoming "Rock the Block" event, scheduled for May 9-10, 2025, is expected to gather about 500 volunteers to eagerly complete more than 20 home preservation and community projects. This event not only underscores the initiative’s continuous commitment to the Oak Park area but also serves as a rallying point for community members to come together and support their neighbors.
