Bracing for a wintry mix, parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania encountered a chilly Sunday, with weather advisories in effect until noon. The National Weather Service in Cleveland reported a slowly eastward-moving ridge before a warm front was set to bring a temperature shift on Monday. Dragging behind it, Ohioans can anticipate a cold front sweeping through the region come Monday night, NWS Cleveland outlines.

As the week commences, the forecast suggests a brief respite on Tuesday courtesy of a building ridge from the Lower Ohio Valley before another round of cold fronts enters on Wednesday. Earlier today, parts of Northeast Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania experienced precipitation, with concerns over icy conditions in the mix. "Some COOP and OHDOT WX stations are still reporting surface wet-bulb temperatures of 31F or 32F in those counties, which suggest some embedded freezing rain exists within primarily plain rain," according to the NWS discussion. This precipitation was expected to spread from the southwest throughout the late morning.

With a rollercoaster of temperatures, the region saw thermometer readings from the upper 20s to mid-30s, with highs anticipated to edge into the mid-30s to lower 40s. Monday, however, promises warmer climes with highs potentially soaring into the 50s. As the atmosphere taps into Gulf moisture, another round of steady, and at times, heavy rain is expected to drench the area starting from early Monday and persist through sunset.

Looking ahead, lake effect precipitation chances post-frontal are minimal. Still, a ridge building behind it will offer a brief dry spell before the Ohio Valley grapples with another incoming low-pressure system. This transient front brings declining temperatures and the potential for lake effect snow, especially in Northwest Pennsylvania, "Still too early to get specific on accumulations, but there may be some minor snow accumulation in the higher terrain of the snow belt," NWS Cleveland advises. While Monday hints at warmth, the ensuing days will see a downward trend, winding into the 40s Tuesday and Wednesday and plummeting to mid-20s by nightfall Wednesday.

As always, with Ohio's ever-shifting weather, residents would do well to prepare accordingly. With the Great Lakes subject to "a series of systems," mariners are particularly alerted to the choppy conditions expected, with the eastern basin necessitating a Small Craft Advisory. NWS Cleveland reports, "Southeast winds will briefly diminish to 10 to 15 knots Monday morning before increasing to 15 to 25 knots during the afternoon," signaling a need for heightened awareness when navigating the temperamental waters of Lake Erie.
