The Ohio State Highway Patrol has identified Rashawn Cannon as the inmate responsible for the assault that led to the death of a correction officer at the Ross Correctional Institution on Christmas Day. Cannon, who was previously sentenced for felonious assault and weapon under disability charges, has now been transferred to the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in the wake of the incident. The assault occurred early in the morning and resulted in the death of Officer Andrew Lansing, a figure described as a well-respected and long-serving member of the Ross Correctional Institution staff.
According to WKYC, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) lamented the tragedy of losing a family member on a holiday meant for family unity. Annette Chambers-Smith, the director of ODRC, expressed in a statement that "The loss of a staff person is difficult, but to lose a family member on Christmas Day at the hands of someone in our custody is a tragedy beyond comprehension."
The victim, Andrew Lansing, had been a part of the Ohio correctional system since 1985, taking only sporadic breaks in service. His dedication to his role was widely recognized, and his death has shaken the prison community. As a mark of respect, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has ordered flags at the Statehouse and other public buildings to be flown at half-staff until sunset on Officer Lansing’s funeral, as reported by WHIO.
