With the onset of winter, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is advocating for heightened cold water safety across Ohio's waterways. The dropping temperatures have inherent risks, and the ODNR calls for preparation and awareness to combat these hazards. "Ohio's waterways are breathtaking year-round, but cold water presents unique and serious risks," ODNR Director Mary Mertz stated. A comprehensive awareness initiative aims to prevent accidents and ensure Ohioans can securely relish the state's natural beauty during wintry months.

As noted by the ODNR, water temperatures below the body's normal 98.6°F can lead to accelerated heat loss, significantly increasing the chances of hypothermia. With nearly 90 percent of boating-related deaths due to drowning and nearly half of those because of cold water immersion, gearing up with a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket becomes a crucial preventative step. Insulating and water-resistant clothing also plays a key role in retaining body heat under cold conditions.

ODNR further suggests the importance of filing a "Float Plan" to inform someone about your whereabouts and estimated return time. Consistent monitoring of weather and water conditions is also advised to avoid being caught off-guard by sudden changes. ODNR has introduced a Cold Water Safety video to boost these safety messages, an illustrative resource to prepare Ohioans for the cold.

Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, Ohioans eager to skate across a frozen river or fish in the winter's quiet are reminded to prioritize safety. "By wearing a life jacket and planning ahead, you can turn a potential danger into a safe and memorable adventure," said Mertz. Additional tips and resources can be found on the ODNR website under Winter Recreation Safety for those planning to venture out this winter.

Celebrating its 75th anniversary next year, the ODNR Division of Parks and Watercraft underscores its long-standing commitment to maintaining a balance between providing excellent customer service and conserving Ohio's 76 state parks and waterways. This winter, the ODNR's message is clear, taking simple but essential precautions can ensure everyone's outdoor experiences are memorable and safe.
