In a recent move by the Ohio House of Representatives, several local heroes have been commemorated through the designation of state highways. State Rep. Don Jones (R-Freeport), the sponsor of House Bill 81, confirmed the passage of amendments that will memorialize individuals who have served their community and country with great honor. As reported by the Ohio House of Representatives, a segment of State Route 39 in Carroll County will be named after Sheriff Dale R. Williams, known for his enduring service as a police officer since 1985 and as a sheriff for 18 years until his passing in 2022.
Commemorations also include renaming a section of I-77 in Noble County as the Staff Sergeant George P. Mizik (USMC) Memorial Highway. Mizik, who served in World War II, was recognized for his dedication with a Purple Heart. Further south, a portion of State Route 7 in Washington County will bear the name Specialist Five Frederick Wayne Taylor Memorial Highway. Specialist Taylor served in the Vietnam War within the U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry Division and was killed in action on May 15, 1968.
Furthering their legislative efforts, the Ohio House unanimously passed House Bill 469, another bill sponsored by Jones, which seeks to establish the Ohio River Commission. This commission, composed of 11 members, will be integrated within the Department of Development to bolster economic growth, marine cargo terminal operations, and travel and tourism on the Ohio River and its tributaries.
The commission's foreseen promotional activities count on fostering synergies among sectors, from cargo to tourism, generating a cohesive strategy for regional advancement. According to the information Jones released, House Bill 469 is now awaiting deliberation by the Ohio Senate, with hopes that the Ohio River's prominence can be leveraged to its fullest potential for economic and community development. With HB 81 moving on to the Governor for a signature, both pieces of legislation carry forward Ohio's commitment to honor its past and secure a prosperous future for its citizens.
